What to do after an accident

The first hour matters. Here is what to do at the scene, what to collect before you leave, and where to read more on each step.

Immediately after the accident

  1. Take a deep breath and stay calm.

  2. Check for injuries and call an ambulance when in doubt. Even if you feel fine, see a doctor, because some injuries take days to show.

  3. If the accident is minor, move the cars to a safe place out of traffic.

  4. Turn on your hazard lights and use cones, warning triangles or flares.

  5. Call the police, even if the accident seems minor. The report matters later.

Collect this before you leave

License plate

Write down the other driver’s plate as soon as you can, before you exchange anything else.

Photos

Both vehicles, the position of the cars, the road, and any injuries. See what to collect.

Witnesses

Names and phone numbers. If nobody saw it happen, you still have options.

Driver details

Name, address, phone number, license number and insurer. If they claim no insurance, still get everything.

Be careful what you say at the scene, and read this before you talk to any insurance company.
